Golden Void – Zo Perron

August 3 – August 31

Opening Reception: August 3, 7-9pm

Arizona “Zo” Perron is a non-binary illustrator currently living in Philadelphia. Most of their work portrays colorful visions that are inspired by the cities of Philadelphia and Trenton. Anonymous characters are depicted deeply traversing dreamy landscapes. Bending and tangling between themselves and their thoughts. Disassociating from the present and existing in another time. These characters display a strange but familiar place to the viewer. A place where characters constantly question their reality, identity, and solitude. This place is a vibrant blend of memories and haunting dreams. This place is known as the golden void.

This series is meant to represent moments of a critical, transitional period where these fictional characters are beginning to unravel. During this period, they experience extremes of connection and disconnection. Their reality goes in and out of a spectrum of nightmares and nostalgia.  Meanwhile, the characters are becoming aware of a need for identity in order to stay above the surface of this unreliable reality. The growth of their identity also becomes key to navigating cycles of solitude.

The golden void is a way to describe a place where the experiences of these characters exist. The word golden defining how important this time is. The word void defining its place in this vast space and time of their universe. Somewhere in the midst of this void, they are recognizing the weight and worth of these moments. They comprehend their own mortality and realize there is something enduring about these times of struggle and growth. I like to believe that when they recognize the gravity of these moments, it gives a somewhat immortal energy to them. An energy that is stored somewhere deep in a golden space and time that we cannot always see.

Zo has received an Associates in Fine Arts from Mercer College in 2013 and a Bachelors in Fine Arts from the University of the Arts in 2017. They have been live painting and showcasing their work in galleries since 2010.
