Monster’s Ball 2014: Bringing Dark Fairy Tales to Life

For those of you who love the Arts in Trenton, have heard of Artworks, but only associate them with Art All Night, we have a ghoulishly good time for you this weekend. This Saturday, October 25, Artworks’ annual Monster’s Ball Halloween party goes down (with tickets are still available), featuring all kinds of fun, entertainment, and if you’re lucky, some prizes!

One of the biggest draws for the Monster’s Ball is the Art of Darkness exhibit. If you attended Art All Night and saw the Dueling Muralists’ display, you caught this year’s theme: Dark Fairy Tales. The artists (which featured Will Kasso, Jim Lemyre, Mek, and Lank) faced their fears head-on with works dedicated to scary fairytales. Three of those completed pieces are currently on display at Artworks, and are a featured piece of this year’s Monster’s Ball.

This is more than just checking out an exhibit, though. We also have live entertainment! The Philadelphia/Trenton-based Molly Rhythm describes themselves as being “theatrical, eclectic, goofy, entertaining, sexy, and loud.” They’re all of that, plus more. Fronted by two great female singers, Molly Rhythm’s unique sound encompasses everything from hip-hop to ska, meeting numerous points in between. If you’re into Trenton’s thriving music scene, or have visited some of the best (and worst) watering holes in the tri-state area, you should know of this crowd-rocking band. If not, head on down to the Monster’s Ball and get rocked… and shocked by Molly Rhythm’s set.

DJ ItsjustAhmad, who is a part of the SAGE Coalition, will be the DJ for the evening. He’s performed as a part of Old Sol, has DJ’d gigs all over the city (and surrounding area), and will be bringing a spooky selection of delectable beats for you to groove to throughout the evening.

The Monster’s Ball will also feature a costume contest. Last year’s Edgar Allen Poe-themed contest showcased some great outfits, and if we learned anything, it’s this: bring your A-game. We saw taxidermy crows out there, people. People have massive imaginations, and if you’re not finalizing your “dary fairy tale”-themed outfit, you’re messing up. There are cash prizes, so this isn’t the time to play coy.

Aside from those festivities, the Monster’s Ball will also be running a few silent horror films (1946’s La Belle et La Bête and 1926’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed), there will be some creepy hands-on art going on, portrait photographs, a “Dark and Scary Fairy Tale” game, and food and drinks. This is a great event that goes on to support future Artworks workshops and needs, so why not enjoy a good time with great people sharing a love for art and fun?

Tickets are still available; grab yours today! Monster’s Ball is an 18+ event, so keep those kooky kiddies at home. It kicks off at 8PM and ends when the Grim Reaper bangs his scythe on the door. We hope to see you there!!
