I am psychologist who has watched a socio-political system fall into dysfunctional partisanship and a sense of helplessness. Many of us, however, realize we can have a well-functioning democracy to defend our many freedoms if we can learn to use equality, commitment, learning and unified sense of community. In a fervent desire that future generations (including my children, grandchildren, and many students) will live in the freest world possible, I have written a guidebook to point people toward a more functional democracy. Since I have limited artistic skills, I am seeking someone who can illustrate this small book with images that enhance and support the meaning of the words, all of which I hope will provide some guidance to a freer society. There are four themes I want images for include:
- Freedom: Life and the basic support of our mental, emotional and physical lives,
Liberty which includes all the activities and experiences that make up a life, and pursuing
happiness which is everything that generates enjoyment, passion, meaning, and the satisfaction of the positives in life. - Democracy: including the motivation/passion/meaning that gets and keeps us involved in
building and using the power which depends on each of us being able to work together and
share the power - Community:
INDIVIDUAL – when we are not in community we are drifting and not able to defend freedom by building and using the power in democracy. To begin this process, we need to be involved in joining or putting ourselves together to be in community with others and then into the engaging that gets us involved in the power of democracy.
COMMUNITY – the drifting that happens when we are together but unable to do the joining that puts together the parts of community that let it work and therefore cannot do the engaging which is the work of building democracy to protect our freedoms. - Violences / Nonviolence: Violence is anything that harms or destroys our freedom and our ability to build and protect it. Nonviolence is anything that allows us to generate and enjoy our freedom.
The work would entail a meeting prior to producing the art for each chapter and periodic discussions as needed while the work continues.
Deadline: I want to finish the book in six months. The artist selected will be free to work at his or her own pace within the context of this deadline updating me periodically on progress of the project.
Payment for the work will be a total agreed upon sum to be paid in part as each chapter is complete.
Employment will be based upon an initial interview including a review of portfolio of work such as illustration, page layout design, cover design, and a discussion on connecting book related ideas to the artwork.
