MY EYES ARE DOWN HERE – Juliet Martin
January 21-February 18
Reception: January 28, 6-8pm
Artist Talk: February 4, 1-215pm
You can’t look away. I’ll make it easy for you.
Headless, handwoven female bodies wait in the gallery. Although confined, ladies proudly look back at objectifying eyes. These women won’t be objects of desire. Embroidered eyes glare from breasts and loins – their faces wouldn’t be seen anyway. Gaze. In the pressure cooker of the elevator, pride, not shame; strength, not fear. Gender power is symmetric here.
Out-of-place eyes and domineering arrows direct the viewer to improper places without wasting any time, away from the missing brain. Or is her brain elsewhere? Identity is forced to become the body.
Look at her and slur. Look into my eyes. Wait, you already are. You can’t look away.

THE SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO POINTS – Katelyn Liepins
January 21-February 18
Reception: January 28, 6-8pm
Artist Talk: February 4, 2:45-4pm
Is a straight line. A line is a construction of distance in space, in time, and in vision. The artist is experimenting with the element of line and how it can exist beyond the traditional form of a drawing. By using different materials and gathering inspiration from architectural elements of the gallery space as well as the world around her, Katelyn creates large-scale installations as well as smaller representations of these demarcations.
