It’s a gorgeous Saturday in the city of Trenton, and it’s also the first of two Family Art Making Days for 2016. From 11AM to 4PM today right here at Artworks we’ll have a number of activities going on:
- Murals with Will “Kasso” & Jonathan “Lank” Connor
- Bike Tire Prints with Wills Kinsley
- Candle Carving with Messiah
- Paper Circuits with Lori Johansson
- Scrap Fabric Creations with Susan Rubin
- Collage with Michael Albert
It’s a ton of fun for the whole family, whether you want to actually make art or just take in the experience (but we hope you make art). We’ll be live-blogging the event throughout the day, bringing you pictures, updates, and whatever else goes down. We’ll also be snapping pictures and sharing them on our Instagram (use hashtag #ArtMakingDay to share your photos) and Facebook pages. We hope to see you here!
11:36AM: Everyone got right into the spirit of Art Making Day. The murals are easiest to hit, as they’re both in the main gallery as you walk into Artworks.
While the bike printing with Wills is great for the cool kids out there.
And for those who aren’t aware, you can sign up to volunteer for Art All Night – Trenton as soon as you get in. For those of you who are unaware, Art All Night – Trenton (which is going into its 10th year this June) is an annual 24-hour arts festival held at the historic Roebling Wire Works building in Trenton, featuring all kinds of art, music, and culture from within Trenton and beyond. You can help put this extravaganza on…and get a free t-shirt for your time! Think about it!
12:32PM: Check out how intense these murals have become:
Lori has an awesome activity going on where you can light up your drawings using watch batteries and tiny lights.
You can also make fabric headbands or necklaces with Susan Rubin as well.
The (Art Making) Day is still young, and it sounds like Messiah’s pulled out a candle carving tool. We’ll check back in a bit.
1:06PM: We took a trip over to Messiah’s Candle Carving class and found Artworks Trenton’s Education Coordinator Jesse Vincent’s making friends.
And we were right; that buzzing indicates some serious candle carving action.
POP artist Michael Albert is here helping people repurpose known logos and images into exciting new collages. The collages in his space are great, and it’s awesome to see people drifting in the back and getting their POP on.
The energy and creative juices in here have us wanted to express ourselves. Join us.
2:22PM: With a hair over 90 minutes left, the art is still chugging along. We’re still putting the finishing touches on LANK’s mural.
On the other side of the main gallery, KASSO (who is done with his mural) has decided to start airbrushing t-shirts.
The POP collage squad has a huge amount of material to sift through.
And the kids made a bunch of AWESOME bike tire print pieces.
Folks who are coming in before 4PM can even still get in on some candle carving, light-up drawings, or making scrap fabric amazingness.
Truth be told, we’ve spent a lot of time taking pictures and documenting such an amazing event…it’s time for us to get our hands dirty and make some art!
Thanks for hanging out with us today; if you’re on Instagram, post some photos from your Art Making Day with the hashtag #ArtMakingDay so we can see what you made. And know that the party doesn’t stop–next weekend is part two of 2016’s Family Art Making journey, with two locations to hit (the Boys & Girls Club in Lawrenceville and the NJ State Museum in Trenton). Both events are all ages, and free to attend.
Now go on and make something!
