Artworks presents “Biomimesis // Sculptures on Paper” solo exhibition by Michelle Rothwell in the Community Gallery.
A whimsical and fantastical series of 3D works-on-paper will be featured starting September 11, 2013, created by cutting-edge, local artist Michelle Rothwell (www.michellerothwell.org).
The artist developed her original approach using the same 3D digital tools that produce video games and animated films. Rothwell has been creating such “virtual sculptures” for more than a decade. She delights in this intricate process as “a way to create more than just a static image; it’s a whole, new imaginary world to explore.”
Using images that combine industrial machines and living things, these Edition-of-One pigment ink prints juxtapose man-made constructs with natural forms and systems. Her novel visual inspiration comes from a new scientific field, Biomimicry or Biomimetics, which examines Nature to design approaches to human problems. Michelle Rothwell is Associate Professor of Animation and Game Graphics at the New York City College of Technology.
The show is open from September 11 through October 10, 2013. The Opening Reception will be held Friday, September 13, from 5 to 7 pm. An Educational Presentation on Saturday, September 14, from 1 to 2 pm, will explain the creative and technical process used to produce her work. Regular gallery hours are Wed – Fri, 11-6, and Sat, 11-4.
